The 14 articles presented in this publication represent some of the latest and most relevant research on rural settlement and farming from the Late Neolithic through the Early Medieval Period in Norway. It deals with the impact of climate change, plague and the AD 536â 7 volcanic event and some of the earliest farms north of the Arctic Circle. It provides new perspectives and archaeological evidence for the Viking age farm of Norway, differences in regional settlement structures of agrarian societies, the relation between houses and graves in the Iron Age, and varying food practices as indicators of societal change

Jordbruksbosetting i bronsealder og førromersk jernalder på Kveøya iNord-Norge

Grunnlaget for kunnskapen vi i dag har om den tidlige jordbruksbosettinga i Norge er tett knyttet opp mot innføringa av maskinell flateavdekking som utgravingsmetode. Mens det metodiske gjennombruddet på landsbasis kom tidlig på 1980-tallet, tok det nesten 30 år før den første større utgravinga fant sted i Nord-Norge; på Kveøya i Sør-Troms. Resultatene fra dette prosjektet inkluderer omfattende dyrkningsspor, tre langhus, samt flere graver og kokegroper datert til bronsealder og førromersk jernalder. Det vil først gis en kort gjennomgang av det eksisterende empiriske grunnlaget for forskning på tidlig jordbruksbosetting i Nord-Norge. De ulike bosettingssporene som ble dokumentert på Kveøya vil deretter presenteres kronologisk. Det vil avslutningsvis gjøres et forsøk på å tolke de endringer som kan spores i bosetting og jordbrukstilpasning, hvor også resultatene av de arkeobotaniske undersøkelsene vil inkluderes
